The Scholarly Gourmet

The Scholarly Gourmet is a "collection of recipes from Alabama's public universities." Produced by the Alabama Higher Education Partnership in honor of their 10th anniversary, this publication is chock-full of recipes from university presidents and alumni, as well as HEP board members. Diane Cuasey, the book's designer, has done a delightful job of arranging the recipes in an easy to find format, and has interspersed photos of campus landmarks, little known trivia facts and stories on well known alumni throughout the chapters. (You'll even find the recipe for Goat Drop Cookies, a world famous favorite of nationally syndicated radio hosts Rick and Bubba.) The spiral binding allows the book to lay flat while you are cooking. This would be a wonderful addition to any cookbook collection.

Two of our favorite recipes in the book (which we've tested and highly recommend) are the Grape Koolaid Ice Cream and the Apple Mountain Dew Dumplings. The ice cream is a mix of only three ingredients (Pet milk, sugar and grape Koolaid powder) and is as easy to prepare as it is good to eat. The apple dumplings are simply Granny Smith apple wedges wrapped in crescent rolls and topped with a mixture of butter, sugar, cinnamon and Mountain Dew. After they are baked, we top with vanilla ice cream and dig in! Both recipes are easy for little helpers!

If you are interested in purchasing The Scholarly Gourmet, send an email to partners@higheredpartners.org. A portion of the proceeds will go to the university alumni department of your choice.
